I've been working my way through the standard computer science program in college and I've noticed that most all universities have switched their Object Oriented Programming courses to the study of java. Now, java MIGHT be a good tool to teach OOP, but I think the whole idea of java and everything that makes it unique is lame. Those who praise it talk about platform independence, but what about the damned virtual machine. This is just one of the MANY problems with java. Hey, ever notice that there are more glitching java applets on the web than there are solid ones? How about the developement tools? One of the more popular development environments being a Bluejay setup. Bluejay is stable, I'll give it that, but so are most java programs. It's the glitchyness that's bothersome. Limewire...? It sucks too. Now, typically, "glitchyness" should be blamed on the programmer, but when you find that most programs in the public domain run fine EXCEPT for those written with java, you have to suspect that there is something wrong.

CONCLUSION?? Java belongs in embedded systems that use java processors. NOWHERE else. If OOP is your goal, need, or desire, than stick with C++. Universities like to teach "the latest", which doesn't always mean the best. The school system thinks it's their job bring the future of technology TO the industry instead of teaching what the industry dictates(thats what vocational schools are for).

...and my ranting comes to an end.
